Tools: White Board, Pencil, Cards
Why is this activity important?
Understanding the manipulation of numbers in increments of 1 and/or 10 is an important skill that helps with the concepts of addition and subtraction, estimating, and basic number sense. It is an important stepping stone that helps with larger math concepts down the road.
How to play:
Roll one standard die (you can use two if the child is able to add).
Write that number in the middle column of the chart.
Write the number that is one more than the original number in the correct column on the work mat.
Write the number that is one less than the original number in the correct column on the work mat.
Using the numbers created, complete the statement, “___ is one more then (original #) and ___ is one less than (original #).”
Challenge:
Using the original number, write a number that is 10 more and 10 less and then complete the above statement with the new numbers.
*If a more concrete method will help the student solve the problems, use connecting cubes or any other manipulative to give a visual representation of the problem.
